As a former competitive swimmer, trust me when I say that investing in a durable pair of swim goggles can improve your stroke and speed overnight. Like a good suit or swimmer’s cap, goggles play an integral role in reducing drag — which, in turn, will allow you to glide through the water quickly and effortlessly.

There are a few things you should consider when browsing for a new pair of swim goggles, the most important being whether you prefer mirrored (sometimes called smoked) or clear lenses. Both lenses often come equipped with full UV protection. However, mirrored lenses block out sunlight and glare, while clear lenses allow sunlight to filter in. If you’re a competitive swimmer or you work out in an outdoor pool, you’ll want mirrored lenses; clear goggles are better for open water and noncompetitive indoor swimming.

To get you started, I’ve pulled together 10 pairs of swim goggles that’ll give you optimal support and coverage — including prescription-lens options because I, too, understand the struggle of not being able to see clearly underwater even with goggles. Keep sunlight, chlorine, and water at bay when you shop the slides ahead.
