Here are some home exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles involved in going up stairs. Specifically, the muscles that support your knees. Do 10 repetitions per leg. Rest 30 seconds. Repeat 2-3 rounds. Do 2 – 3 times a week. Talk to your doc first if you have knee issues.
