If you’ve ever had a migraine, then you know how intense and painful they can be. Around 12 percent of the US adult population suffers from migraines, and while some form of medication is typically needed to treat them, you can find countless remedies online that may help ease the pain. I’ve been suffering from migraines for years, and I, like many others, am often hunting for new migraine hacks that actually work.

I’ve tried drinking caffeine, drinking water, lying down in a dark room, and even applying essential oils — but nothing seemed to help. Then I found a video from TikToker Paige More that totally changed the way I deal with my migraines. More suggests putting your feet in a bowl or sink filled with hot water while keeping a bag of frozen food or an ice pack on your neck. The combination of heat and cold is supposed to relieve some of the pain, and — spoiler alert — it works!

The science behind this hack is all about the nerve pathways and blood vessels in your brain. While scientists still don’t know exactly how or why migraines happen, one common theory is that they occur because the brain stops constricting the nerve pathways that open the arteries to the brain. As a result, too much blood flows into the brain, resulting in a headache — or, if it’s really bad, a migraine. When you ice your neck and stick your feet in hot water, you’re encouraging that extra blood to flow back down away from your brain, which can lessen the pain.

It’s important to note that this hack won’t cure a migraine or make it go away completely, and it might not be equally effective for everyone who tries it. When I put it to the test, my migraine had just started, and I noticed some significant pain relief almost immediately. I love this hack because it’s easy, and it helps me think more clearly in the grip of a bad migraine so I can grab my usual helpers (water and pain relievers). I also always try to take a nap when I feel a migraine coming on, and lessening the pain right away makes it easier for me to fall asleep.

If you’re regularly battling migraines or even just bad headaches, I’d recommend trying this hack. It’s simple, it’s free, and it could make a huge difference in your head and neck pain. I’m a fan!
