I’ve been eyeing essential-oil roller balls for menstrual cramps for a while now. They seem like convenient and compact tools to keep nearby or in my bag when cramps strike unexpectedly. I also wouldn’t mind adding another remedy to my repertoire.

As far as at-home cramp solutions go, things like applying heat and physical activity remain the most popularly recommended. However, there is some evidence that suggests essential oils could be useful tools. One very small study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research found that patients with primary dysmenorrhea (or menstrual cramps) who massaged a blend of lavender, clary sage, and marjoram essential oils diluted in an unscented cream on their lower abdomens from the end of one menstruation until the beginning of their next menstruation experienced relief. Another study found that the inhalation of lavender could perhaps help alleviate some menstrual-cramp symptoms.

Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s a cure-all for horrible cramps. Everyone is different in their response to at-home remedies, and if you do experience bad period pain, you should always check in with a doctor for their advice. It’s also a good idea to check with a doctor before incorporating essential oils into your routine, too, as some essential oils are not considered safe for people with certain health conditions or people of certain ages.

Essential oils can also be particularly irritating to the skin, so if you do choose to try them out, you’ll want to be sure they’re diluted. It’s typically recommended to test them on a small patch of skin first to ensure no irritation.

If you are ready to give essential oils a try, rollerballs make the process a little easier because they’re preblended and often already diluted in a carrier oil (though you should always check the ingredients list!). Ahead, check out four that I’m interested in adding to my shopping cart.
