If you’re familiar with Joe Rogan’s podcast and kettlebell training, you’ve probably seen his slightly funny – but even more dangerous – kettlebell routine on the ONNIT YouTube channel.

In his workout bit, Joe is gripping and ripping some heavy kettlebells and is obviously doing an alternating kettlebell clean with doubles.

In this video, I want to break down the problem of this kettlebell exercise, explain how he might have injured his shoulder through it and show you what you can do instead.

The kettlebell clean (with doubles and singles) is an awesome exercise; however in Joe Rogan’s demonstration, there are a 5 problems I’m highlighting in this video.

1- If you’re going for doubles, don’t alternate between left and right but instead, do them togehter!

Double Cleans are a vital component of a basic kettlebell exercise called the long cycle. Double Cleans almost work and stabilize the entire body and it’s a great exercise that requires a lot of skill

2- Use light weight; especially if youre technique is not yet developed!

The Girevoy or Kettlebell Sports Style is like the ballet of kettlebells and it takes some serious effort to learn it. You even see some OGs and legendary coaches like Dennis Vasilev talking about how they need to work on their Overhead fixation and he’s a 7 time world Kettlebell champion.

Mastering the girevoy kettlebell technique definitely takes practice and patience.

3- If you go heavy and you’re alternating, you got the perfect recipe for injury!

Essentially, you grip it and rip it! Everytime the bell lands in the rack, your shoulder is banging around violently. This leads to a possible injury of the wrist and shoulder joint and a serious inflammation of the rotator cuff and all the tendons and ligaments attached to it.

4- If Joe didn’t warm up prior to this, you got the perfect recipe for disaster!

Because the shoulder lacks stability, it’s best to tread lightly with your shoulder training. One of the ways to keep injury away from you is a proper warm up. In the mentioned ONNIT video, it seems like Joe didn’t warm up prior to this demonstration.

If you’re not warmed up, going heavy, with a dangerous exercise on a delicate joint, you’ve messed up seriously!

5- Alternating Cleans with heavy weights leads to incorrect tecnique!

The clean, like most of the kettelbell exercises, is working your core, among other muscle groups. If you rip it and grip it, you’re essentially pulling the weight with your arms. If you pull the weight with your arms, you’re not utilizing leg drive and core strength.

Essentially, you’re doing the exercise wrong and as well know, doing free weights wrong can be.. bad
